Music, Fashion and Climate Change

Mobile phones and music have always had a special relationship dating right back to the days of the first ringtones. People used to pay big bucks to have a version of their favourite song rendered in monosyllabic beeps, and the irritation this invoked in strangers on a train is just a memory now. Phones have developed incredibly over the past few years, going past the simple polyphonic ringtones to having the ability to play mp3s and other media formats, allowing users to listen to music as it was intended on their phones.

Hip hop is one of the most popular forms of music and has continually developed since it's birth in the late 70's to eventually become seen as a `mainstream`, even dominant, form of music by the 1990s. Hip hop was initially popular with people living in built up urban areas, but its influence has spread and now Hip Hop holds one of the largest and most diverse listener bases from all around the world.

Youth culture is about so much more than clothes. It is an integration of music, lyrics, attitudes and language as well as the way you have your hair, the type of slang you speak, the specific sub culture you associate with. All of these different aspects that are adopted by young people produce a form of identity, self expression and acceptance by like minded people. Hip hop music and the stars that where them influence hip hop fashion, while hip hop fashion on the street influences the music.

The Oracle

Kasha's album is upon us. 2 Years in the making, his debut album 'The Oracle' aims to take you back to when Hip Hop was real Hip Hop. But this isn't about the past, this is the future, the future of where Hip Hop is going, about redefining the genre, showing people alternative ways, This is the Oracle.

POP play our part

United States editor Goldenways sits down UK Rap artist Kasha for an in-depth interview on what drove him into hip, his current whereabout and what plans he has in-store for us.

Goldenways: What was the first most influential line you heard, and why did it hit you so hard?

Distinctions of Urban Culture The following piece was written by Get Lowe of Vivid Imagery who is one of Kasha's producers. It describes in quite some detail about where hip hop culture comes from. Hip Hop as an artform today has moved on greatly from the origins back in the 70's with influences from many forms of music and appeal to much larger audiences across the world. However for some artists the use of hip hop as medium to spread a message of positivity still remains and it still can be a refuge for the miss guided youth.
