My Time with Kasha - Interview on Music, Lyrics and Hiphop

United States editor Goldenways sits down UK Rap artist Kasha for an in-depth interview on what drove him into hip, his current whereabout and what plans he has in-store for us.

Goldenways: What was the first most influential line you heard, and why did it hit you so hard?

Help the Missguided Youth

Distinctions of Urban Culture The following piece was written by Get Lowe of Vivid Imagery who is one of Kasha's producers. It describes in quite some detail about where hip hop culture comes from. Hip Hop as an artform today has moved on greatly from the origins back in the 70's with influences from many forms of music and appeal to much larger audiences across the world. However for some artists the use of hip hop as medium to spread a message of positivity still remains and it still can be a refuge for the miss guided youth.

No more pub music

The Government is currently passing a law to restrict the Live performance of music in venues. The law basically requires pubs to apply for a license before they are allowed to play live music. Furthermore, each venue can only apply for 12 licenses a year. What this means is that old pub round the corner that puts on live bands and performances all the time for a bit of fun will have to stop. All them little places that you go to for a few quick covers of songs or to tidy your skills before you do the larger events will disappear.

Banning Lyrics from Songs

Banning words in music There has been a recent news article where a well respected and long term leader of the Hip Hop scene  wants to ban particular words in music's lyrics because of the offense they can cause to certain people.  The words Simmons wanted to ban were Bitch, Ho and Nigga as they are deemed to be racist and sexist. Now  i partially agree with Simmons on this but the idea of censorship in music heavily unnerves me and it's a  dangerous road to go down.

Against the grain.

Why do musicians fight the establishment?

I see this a lot and especially in the underground urban market. Acts will write tracks and rant on the stage about their hate for the music establishment. Phrases like 'not giving us the recognition' 'ignoring the underground market'. To me it doesn't make sense. Why put down the one thing that can help you more than anything else?

UK Rap - Recipe to Success

The US, UK argument over music has been going on an eternity. UK's anger toward the US for restricting their exposure is common. It seems we are not getting the coverage we need and are always beaten to the deals by the Americans. The simple truth is that the US market is bigger and thus there is more money to be made. Money is after all what the music business is about, right?... more about that in a minute.

Keeping it Real on MySpace

MySpace is a funny thing. In a few years it has gone from nothing to the largest music network and one of the largest social networks in the world. There is a lot of controversy over what people think of MySpace. Many people look down on it as some cheap form of promotion or a way to waste your life clicking away. Other people see it as a great networking tool, meeting people, socialising and keeping in touch with friends. Either way you look at it is very hard to ignore the popularity of MySpace.
